10 Most Controversial Movie Sex Scenes

Cinema is full of controversial sex scenes that push the boundaries of what viewers deem acceptable show us the full range of human sexuality.

1. Shame

Shame is a clever drama in which sex is portrayed as the opposite of intimacy. Michael Fassbender earned a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of Brandon, a 30-something sex addict fornicating his way through New York City. 

2. Chloe

Chloe is a 2009 erotic thriller film directed by Atom Egoyan, a remake of the 2003 French film Nathalie.  The main character, Chloe, is a call girl, who becomes involved with Catherine, a gynecologist, and her husband David, who is a college professor. The movie is remembered for passionate lesbian love scenes filled with untamed lust. 

3. Lolita

The 1997 American-French adaptation of  Vladimir Nabokov's novel of the same name  is directed by Adrian Lyne and written by Stephen Schiff. The premier of the movie was met with much controversy in the United States, due to its portrayal of a relationship with an underaged girl. 

4. Black Swan

According to a study for Daily Star, the steamy lesbian sex scene between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis from Black Swan topped the poll – receiving 49% of the votes – as the most iconic sex scene in cinema.

5. Requiem for a Dream

Requiem For a Dream is responsible for coining the term "ass to ass", which describes two naked girls inserting a large dildo in their rectums and then "pushing it real good." Indeed, it may easily be the most uncomfortable sex scene in film history. 

6. American Psycho

American Psycho’s original NC-17 stemmed largely from an explicit sex scene involving Bateman and a pair of prostitutes. In the scene, you watch the soon-to-be serial killer have sex in the most narcissistic way imaginable. 

7. Blue is the Warmest Color

Blue Is the Warmest Colour is a 2013 French coming-of-age romantic drama film written, produced, and directed by Abdellatif Kechiche, starring Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux. The film revolves around Adèle, a French teenager who discovers desire and freedom when a blue-haired aspiring painter enters her life. Much of the controversy was centred around claims of poor working conditions on set by the crew and the lead actresses and also the film's raw depiction of sexuality.

8. Brokeback Mountain

Brokeback Mountain is a 2005 American romantic drama film directed by Ang Lee. The movie depicts the complex emotional and sexual relationship between Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist in the American West from 1963 to 1983. The depiction of a homosexual relationship between two men sparked several controversies and even led to a theater cancellation in Utah.

9. Pink Flamingos

Pink Flamingos is a 1972 American transgressive black comedy film directed, written, produced, filmed and edited by John Waters. In one of the film's most infamous scenes, the two of them have sex while crushing a live chicken between them as Cotton looks on through a window.
