The Trouble with Choice and Paying for Porn in 2018
Just less than 10 years ago, buying a membership in one of the porn sites that you randomly found through various search engines was like playing the lottery.

Back then there were very few review sites and those would usually belong to various porn networks themselves. With the growth of various free tube sites, it does seem that there is a rather strong push towards streaming subscriptions (just like Netflix but for porn). Going back to the point, why did it feel like you were playing a lottery when spending money for porn? The sites were not competing as aggressively as they do now. You used to have plenty of “porn studios” that resold third-party content instead of making something on their own, not to mention various sites that were created just for a quick buck. Thankfully, due to various changes and more competition, there are less junk studios and those that do exist, tend to produce content worth paying for. That, of course, brings us to a topic of monopolization. For example: did you know most of the top porn sites (be it free tubes or first tier studios) are owned by the same company (Mindgeek)? That requires a separate topic of its own.

Anyway, today the situation is much different. We got free content as well as many well-respected porn studios working together. However, that does bring us to another issue. The problem with paying for porn. It does bring us to the age-old dilemma: the more choice you have, the harder it is to pick a site and join it. It does seem like the human mind is inefficient when it comes to decision making. According to various studies, more choice leads to less happiness and same applies to porn. If you pay for something, you’d better be sure that it is worth every single penny. If you have two flavors of the ice-cream (let’s say vanilla and chocolate), picking your favorite for the day is extremely easy. However, if you add cookies n cream, chocolate coconut, banana chocolate chip and ten others, you are left more confused than ever. The choice does paralyze us, or rather too much of a good thing. Sure, thanks to porn review sites and lists like Pornplots or gazillion others, people at least get to separate the good crop from the bad, but I do wonder if that is enough? We did have more studios in early days, but it was so much easier to pick your favorite. Mostly because the paid porn sites were so different from one another. Now, it looks like every single one of them is as good as the rest. It does make you think about the future and how exactly will we be paying for porn in the next 20 years? Porn sites were and will always be popular, but it looks like, with such rapid growth, the decisions are getting harder to make.

Having all things considered, would you say that it is now easier or harder to find sites that are worth spending money on? Were you ever paralyzed by choice or too much of a good thing?

What's your reaction?
